Matter of Balance
A Matter of Balance (MOB) workshop is a discussion-based cognitive restructuring of how falls are viewed accomplished through group discussion, utilizing problem-solving techniques, viewing videos, and sharing practical solutions.
Where and how long is an MOB Workshop?
Who can attend an MOB workshop?

Any adult 60+ years of age:
-
who is concerned about falls or has fallen in the past,
-
has restricted their activities because of concerns about falls,
-
Is interested in improving flexibility, balance, and strength.

*If an individual requires the assistance of a caregiver at all times, the caregiver is welcome to attend but does not participate in the discussion.

Workshops are offered for both in-person and virtual attendance.

Gentle exercises for in-person workshops do include some standing, while the exercises for virtual workshops are all done seated.

Both in-person and virtual workshops meet either once a week for 2 hours (over 8 weeks) or twice a week for 2 hours (over 4 weeks).

The virtual workshop, which has an additional session 0 requires a computer, laptop, or iPad/tablet and camera on at all times.

What does an MOB workshop consist of?

Cognitive restructuring on how falls are viewed through group discussion, viewing videos, and participation in gentle exercises.

Gentle exercises are introduced at week 3 for in-person and week 4 for virtual.

A presentaion from a professional healthcare worker - a nurse, physical therapist, or occupational therapist - focused on fall prevention.
How does a MOB benefit older adults and/or caregivers?

Recognition that others have a fear of falling.

Education on strategies to reduce the fear and risk of falls

Gradual Increase in activity levels can lead to better balance, flexibility, and strength.
