About The Event

The 8 hour A Matter of Balance coach training opportunity is limited to 8 teams of two (16 total people) per event. As the training is supported by grant funding from the Administration for Community Living, completed applications will be reviewed to verify desire and ability to lead at least 2 A Matter of Balance programs within one year of certification in Northern Virginia, and willingness to support data collection efforts by Marymount University to fulfill grant reporting requirements.

A Matter of Balance should have:

  • A desire to work with older adults and improve their lives through reducing falls risk
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to perform range of motion and low-level strengthening exercises
  • Ability and commitment to maintain program fidelity

Overview of A Matter of Balance Class Sessions

Session 1: Introduction to the Program

Session 2: Exploring Thoughts and Concerns about Falling

Session 3: Exercise and Fall Prevention

Session 4: Assertiveness and Fall Prevention

Session 5: Managing Concerns about Falling

Session 6: Recognizing Fall-ty Behavior

Session 7: Recognizing Fall Hazards in the Home and Community

Session 8: Practicing No Fall-ty Habits and Falls Prevention: Putting it All Together

Core Elements to Maintaining Fidelity to the A Matter of Balance Program

  • Coaches attend an 8-hour training and earns a certificate of completion
  • Two coaches lead the program, and follow the curriculum and exercises as outlined in the A Matter of Balance course materials Coaches set up a Guest Healthcare Professional Visit as outlined in the A Matter of Balance course materials Master Trainers observe new coaches once during their first A Matter of Balance class
  • Coaches attend a 2 hour leader update annually
  • Coaches participate in collection of forms as outlined in A Matter of Balance coach training session
  • Class size is 8-12 participants
  • Class completion is 5 or more sessions

Date: Thursday, April 4, 2019

Time: 8:30am – 4:30pm

Location: Fairfax Government Center, Conference Room 7, 12000 Government Center Pkwy, Fairfax, VA 22035

Parking: On-site parking is available on either side of the building

Sign in: The event will begin promptly at 8:30am. Please arrive a few minutes early to sign in and get seated.

Payment: Registration fee = $60

Registration closes on March 28, 2019.

Expenses covered at training:

  • A Matter of Balance coach training manual and relevant recruitment and support materials
  • Fidelity review of one of your A Matter of Balance classes, conducted by a Master Trainer, to answer questions and provide support of new leaders
  • Access to renting the 2 required DVD’s to show your classes

Expenses participants will be responsible for:

  • Registration fee
  • Transportation
  • Snacks and lunch (cafeteria on-site, restaurants nearby--driving distance)
