About The Event
The 5 hour SAIL leader training opportunity is limited to 30 people per event. As the training is supported by grant funding from the Administration for Community Living, completed applications will be reviewed to verify desire and ability to lead at least 2 SAIL programs within one year of certification in Northern Virginia, and willingness to support data collection efforts by Marymount University to fulfill grant reporting requirements.
Overview of Stay Active and Independent for Life Classes
• Warm Up 3-5 minutes
• Aerobics 18-20 minutes
• Balance Exercises 10 minutes
• Strength exercises 15-18 minutes
• Stretching/falls prevention education 8-10 minutes
For motivation and assessment, the class participants undergo baseline Fitness Checks when they start the exercise class. The checks are repeated at 12-week intervals. The Fitness Checks include: 8-Foot Up & Go, Biceps Curl, and Chair Stand tests.
Core Elements to Maintaining Fidelity to the Stay Active and Independent for Life Program
• Leaders attend a 5-hour training and earns a certificate of completion
• Leaders follow the curriculum and exercises as outlined in the SAIL course materials
• Master Trainers observe new leaders once during the first 12 weeks
• Leaders attend a 2 hour leader update annually
• Leaders participate in collection of forms as outlined in the SAIL leader training session
• Classes offered 2-3 times a week for 55 minutes
• Class size is no greater than 20 participants per certified SAIL leader
SAIL leaders should have:
• A desire to work with older adults and improve their lives through reducing falls risk
• Previous experience of teaching an exercise class or exercises to older adults
• Current or willingness to earn CPR certification
• Sufficient health and fitness to teach a 55 minute fitness class, using up to 5lbs of weights
• Ability and commitment to maintain program fidelity

Parking: Underground garage parking available, access from N. Randolph Street, for $8 (credit card only-no attendant on duty); metered street parking; Ballston metro stop is one block away
Sign in: The event will begin promptly at 8:30am. Please arrive a few minutes early to sign in and get seated. Elevator access to floor opens to public at 8am.

Expenses covered at training:
- Stay Active & Independent for Life leader training manual and relevant recruitment and support materials
- Fidelity review of one of your Stay Active & Independent for Life classes, conducted by a Master Trainer, to answer questions and provide support of new leaders
